Print: Jackson County Courthouse

from $35.00

For this portrait, I selected the impressive Jackson County Courthouse, situated in the center of Murphysboro’s downtown square. I’ve always looked at this building in awe. It’s huge, and a little imposing, but also one of the most majestic buildings in Southern Illinois.

The Jackson County courthouse was designed by notable Illinois architect Nelson Strong Spencer (whose claim to fame is designing municipal and academic buildings in Champaign, IL). Spencer imagined the courthouse in a somewhat odd combination of Classical Revival style (pediments, Doric columns, entablature) and Beaux-Arts (parapet, balustrades, roof). The building was constructed in 1927, the fourth iteration of the county courthouse, and Murphysboro’s third version.

The Jackson County Courthouse is still active. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
